I’m a freelance literary translator, working from Arabic, German and Russian into English.
I specialise in children’s books, adult fiction and literary non-fiction, with a particular interest in history, travel, ecology and nature writing.
I’ve been translating professionally since 2002, and have experience of many fields and sectors. I work with a wide range of publishers, companies, charities and research institutions.
Please contact me if you’d like a quote for a translation project.
My work has been published by Penguin Random House (Puffin Books, Rider Books and Allen Lane), Comma Press, Bonnier, Signal 8 Press, Pushkin Press and Eland Books. I’ve most recently translated books for Phaidon and Darf Publishing. Essays and short stories I’ve translated have appeared in The Guardian, The Washington Post, Index on Censorship, Words Without Borders, Banipal and The Massachusetts Review. Please see my Publications list for details of authors and texts I’ve translated.
I was recently shortlisted for the Arts Foundation Literary Translation Fellowship 2016. I was awarded an Arabic translation mentorship with the BCLT in 2013 and was named one of New Books in German’s Emerging Literary Translators in 2012.
Besides full-length book translations, I take on commissions to translate short stories and samples of novels, book reviews and marketing literature. I also write reader reports and publish book reviews.
I was the Arabic tutor on the Translate in the City literary translation summer school at London’s City University in 2016. I’m an experienced teacher and offer Russian and Arabic translation workshops with Shadow Heroes.
I have given translation workshops or spoken on panels at Newnham College, University of Cambridge; IMES, University of Edinburgh; The University of Bath; the British Library; and the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI) Western Regional Group. I have also spoken about translating Arabic children’s fiction on a panel at the London Book Fair and will be speaking on a panel about translating non-fiction at LBF 2018.
My rates for literary translation tend to be between £90 and £120 per 1000 words.
In my academic translation work, I am particularly interested in politics, history, geography, ecology, horticulture, education, linguistics and literary criticism.
My rates for academic translation tend to be in the region of £100 – £140 per 1000 words.
Commercial and technical translation
I also have extensive experience of translating business, legal and medical texts from Arabic, German and Russian. Websites, reports, press releases, brochures, contracts, instruction manuals… you name it, I’ve translated it at some point since I started freelancing in 2002.
For commercial clients, my rates vary depending on many factors, including the time frame, the amount of research required, and whether it’s a one-off project or repeat work for a regular client.
